A Review of AT&T’s First Android: The Motorola BACKFLIP with MOTOBLUR
February 18, 2010 - By Justin E. Gehrke
February 18, 2010 – Beginning on March 7, 2010, AT&T will begin offering the newly released Motorola BACKFLIP with MOTOBLUR. In addition to its first Android offering, the device can be considered an alternative smartphone for users who want the functionality but don’t necessarily want an Apple iPhone or BlackBerry. Initial pricing is set at $199.00 and requires subscription to an AT&T data plan. Customers willing to enter into a two-year contract will qualify to receive a $100.00 rebate. The contract-free purchase price has been reported as being around $325.00.

Equipped with both a QWERTY keyboard and touch-screen functionality, the BACKFLIP boasts a unique design. In its closed position, the keyboard faces out on one side, while the screen faces out on the other. Opening the phone affords the user several options. It can be flipped to have the keyboard and screen facing the same direction. Alternatively, it can be left in a V-like position to allow it to stand up, without the need for an additional accessory or clumsily leaning it against another object (Read: Apple iPhone). In addition to watching a movie, some users may also find this useful for functions like a digital photo frame, alarm clock, or taking notes while surfing the web.

Another key feature, as indicated by the name, is the inclusion of the patented MOTOBLUR technology. This feature allows users to pull informations and feeds from contacts, social networks, etc. The content is then conveniently displayed in a single location, on the devices home screen. According to David Christopher, AT&T’s Chief Marketing Officer, the device “brings together the best of social networking with the nation’s fastest 3G network.” Since the BACKFLIP will join the current list of AT&T models that provide HSPA 7.2 Technology and is equipped with WiFi capabilities, users will be able to surf quickly, regardless of where they are. The phone also provides the oft sought after ability to talk and surf at the same time, which will please many potential buyers.
A key consideration for many, before buying any phone, is knowing how well it was rated. The Motorola BACKFLIP with MOTOBLUR won this year’s “CNET Best of CES” award, based on its performance across nine categories. If the editors of CNET liked it, chances are most gadget lovers will, too. As always, the question that remains is whether or not it will be an “iPhone Killer”. As usual, the answer is “probably not”. For die-hard Motorola fans who have longed for something close, the BACKFLIP with MOTOBLUR will probably satisfy them nicely.
Below is a list of the published specifications of the Motorola BACKFLIP with MOTOBLUR.
