Apple iOS4 hits iTunes, Jailbreakers proceed with caution
June 21, 2010 - By Justin E. Gehrke
At 10:00 PST, Apple quietly began pushing out iOS 4 for iPhone to users, via the recently updated iTunes 9.2. While some users still reporting that it is unavailable to them, we were able to download it via iTunes as evidenced by the screencap below. Despite the fact that the iPhone 4 is not set to received by those who pre-ordered until at June 24, 2010 (unless they’re lucky and get it June 23rd), many 3GS users are ready to try iOS 4 out, to at least get a partial glimpse of the more than 100 updated features.
Those iPhone 3GS users who have unlocked their devices either out of necessity or just for fun should definitely proceed with caution. While it has been reported that redsn0w 0.9.5b5-2 (for Windows and Mac) is compatible with the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G, it has not been confirmed as being compatible with the iPhone 3GS. The folks over at the iPhone Dev Team have assured the world that a version for the iPhone 3GS will be released by the end of the month.

Before attempting the upgrade, owners should ensure they have updated their version of iTunes to 9.2 and checked for updates of all their installed apps. This will both save some time and ensure that potential version conflicts are minimized. Once you’re ready, just plug in your iPhone, and, if you don’t already see a notice like the one above, click “Check for Updates.”
For jailbreakers, the best advice is to be patient. There are several sites reporting that jailbreak options are available, but patience is probably the best idea. Waiting for the proven jailbreakers over at the iPhone Dev Team may save you a lot of headaches, in the event one of the unconfirmed alternatives fail. Owners of jailbroken iPhone 3GS devices should avoid updating to iTunes version 9.2, since it has been reported to break the jailbreak, as well.
Those who are able to grab some bandwidth from Apple’s servers and install can expect to see some of the new features like multitasking, folders, wallpapers, unified inbox, multiple Exchange accounts. Of these new features, one of the most anticipated is multitasking. Hopefully, users will be able to install multiple Vuvuzela apps and sound them simultaneously in joyous celebration.
