Angry Birds beta to hit the Android Market today

September 3, 2010 - By Justin E. Gehrke

It looks like the long-awaited Android version of the popular iPhone game, Angry Birds, may finally become available today. It may be a beta version, but, for many, any version of the bird-launching, pig-cracking game is enough. In a blog post dated September 1, 2010, Rovio, the game’s developer explains that the original plan was to run the beta in a closed environment, but the determination was made to open it up to all Android users.

According to the post, the beta version, Angry Birds Lite, should be available for download in the Android Market sometime today. In typical precautionary fashion, Rovio points out that the beta is being made available on an “as is” basis. According to them, the game has been tested on numerous, second-generation Android devices and proven to be functional. They are soliciting feedback via the ‘bug button’ provided within the game’s menu, in order to identify any problems users may encounter. For those who just can’t wait a minute longer than they have to, Rovio has created a subscription list that promises to keep them up-to-date with the latest Angry Birds information.

For those who may have not had the good fortune to play Angry Birds, Rovio summarizes the plot as:

“The survival of the Angry Birds is at stake. Dish out revenge on the green pigs who stole the Birds’ eggs. Use the unique destructive powers of the Angry Birds to lay waste to the pigs’ fortified castles.”

The premise is very simple. There are 120 levels of increasing complexity. Your job is to catapult the birds into stronghold’s built by the pigs. Why? The pigs have robbed the birds of their eggs. Thusly, the birds have declared war on the evil swine. Lest one think that there is no redeeming value to the game, it’s important to point out that the game requires actual analytical skill in determining how and where to hurl your birds. Yes, it might not be PBS material, but it is somewhat educational.

While it is also available for the Palm Pre and some Nokia devices, its biggest success has been in Apple’s iPhone App store. Ranked as the #1 paid app in the iTunes Store, Angry Birds has proven to be a phenomenal success. If you haven’t yet, download Angry Birds for iPhone or iPod Touch today. At just $0.99, you should just skip the Lite version and hand over the dollar. You’re guaranteed to get your money’s worth. There is also an HD version of Angry Birds for iPad, which is priced at $4.99 and provides a much higher quality and life-like Angry Bird experience.
